Tenant Rights in Nova Scotia
Rent Increases: Landlords must give 4 months written notice before increasing rent. In 2026, there is no provincial rent cap — increases must be justified.
Damage Deposit: Maximum half a month's rent. Must be returned within 10 days of moving out (less any damages).
Repairs: Landlords must maintain properties in a good state of repair. Submit repair requests in writing and keep copies.
Eviction: Landlords need valid legal reasons to evict. Proper written notice required. Contact Residential Tenancies before responding to any eviction notice.
Discrimination: Landlords cannot refuse rental based on source of income (social assistance), race, religion, or family status under NS Human Rights Act.
